Discussion:
Netmeeting Hangs
(too old to reply)

I have never installed Netmeeting, so I assume the
version I have was installed as part of my windows
installations. I don't know what version it is since it
hangs at launch and never recovers. The splsh screen
does not say.

I am running Windows XP SP2.

When I launch Netmeeting, it hangs forever and never
recovers.

I see no way to uninstall or reinstall it. When I went
to download netmeeting from Microsoft web, the only
version I was able to find was not for XP.

Help...

What can I do or try to get it working?

The version supplied with XP SP2 is 3.01 (5.1.2600.218)

There is no way to uninstall and reinstall strictly speaking and no
downloadable version will install.

There is a procedure that allows reinitializing of the registry
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q267958) but I
think it is unlikely that it will have an effect on your problem.

Has NetMeeting ever run on this system before? I would suspect(at least
initially) the sound card or capture card/camera -- what devices do you
have? Do you have the latest drivers? Do they function normally otherwise?

Brian,

Thanks for the timely response.
Here are the answers to your questions:

I have not used Netmeeting on this machine since I
installed XP on it. It has been a long time. Of course,
now I have a need and it does not work.

5.1.2600.218
This is the version I have.

I followed the procedure at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-
US;Q267958 figuring if it helps, great, if not, no harm.
However, I do not have the SP 2 on CD and it is asking
for that in order to reinstall/initialize. Any idea's
how I can satisfy the installer?

Thanks again.

Dave

I am not sure -- I have never had it ask for a CD.

Do you have a Windows/ServicePackFiles directory? You could try pointing it
there.

Brian,

Excellent idea. That worked. I got it reintalled.

I double clicked on the Net Meeting Icon, and got the
wizard for the setup criteria (name, email, sound and mic
tests, etc) once I went through all of that, the wizard
closed and the splash screen came up. (I did NOT select
to connect to any server upon start up)

So that is now where it sits. Hung with the splash
screen.

Going to the task manager does not even show NetMeeting
is running, however, looking on the processes tab shows
Netmeeting at 98% CPU usage.

Any idea's?

It sounds like your sound card is testing normally then. To be sure it is
not the root of the problem you could (temporarily) disable the driver and
see if it affects NM start up.

NM has a problem with fonts that are malformed ( a few years ago there were
a whole bunch out there but the use of the fonts seems to have abated)-- on
startup it reads all font files in the fonts directory. Is it possible you
have some "rogue" font that is old or malformed?

Brian,

Ok, I'll try and disable the sound card drivers and see
if that helps. As for the Font's idea. What can I do to
determine if I have "the problem"

Well the easiest way to determine if you have the problem is to strip the
fonts directory back to the known good fonts ( any font released with XP or
Office would be in that class) and see if the problem goes away.

Determining which font is the culprit then is a trial and error job (aided
by a binary search strategy -- put half of the fonts where there is at least
one known problem back and retry, and keep removing half until the problem
goes away if the problem is in that set... and so on)

Brian,

I pulled all of the fonts older than 8/2001 which was the
same date as my win.com file as per the directions on the
Web site. This had no effect on Netmeetings performance
it still hangs.

The weird aprt of this failure is when it hangs, it can't
be stopped. Ending task does not even kill it. It
requires a reboot.

I'll try the sound card disable yet tonight.

Brian,

Ooppps, I forgot to answer these questions...
You wrote:

otherwise?

My sound card is intgrated with my M/B.
I do not have camera.

As far as I know, I have the latest drivers and eveything
appears to work normally. I do use other clients
like "Elluminate" Web Ex, AOL, Yahoo, etc and those all
support chat, file transfer and voice without any
problems.
