I'm using netmeeting in win XP with a router and ADSL. My father with
win98 and ISDN.
My father can easily provide me the IP number so I can call him and
everything works fine (audio video sharing etc.).
The problem is he can't call me. I tried to get the IP LAN and even
the IP WAN (got it with a small utility IP2). But nothing happen.
Now I have planned to move my father to ADSL with router but I'm
stopped by this problem. We will not able to communicate anymore with
netmeeting.
Is anyone able to use netmeeting with the router?
Thanks
Bye

To be called when behind a router generally you must:

1) assuming you have administrative control of the router configure the
router to use your client as the dmz client (hopefully using an
appropriately configured software firewall on the client). The exact steps
are different for every brand of router.
2) supply the wan IP of the router to the potential caller ( this could
change often depending on dsl implementation so it might be necessary to do
it before every call)

Well not exactly clear for my knowledge. Sorry for that.
My router Zyxel 660R doesn't have any DMZ function. I'm using a Zone
alarm firewall but looks like everything is ok. Netmeeting works
perfectly in any function audio video sharing when I call, with the
exception of not being able to be called.
I provide my WAN IP to my potential caller but no results.
Do you think I can avoid the problem if I buy a USB ADSL modem? Can I
get the right IP to use Netmeeting?
Bad day the day I bought a router. It gives me more problems than
solutions.
Thanks

I don't know about the specifics of the router but unless it has a built in
H.323 proxy function or you can use a dmz type(it may have a different name
on the device) function, you will not be able to have incoming calls.

If audio/video works on outgoing calls it must have some sort of built in
H.323 support or it must be configured in a dmz type mode already. If it
has built in H.323 support you would still have to forward tcp 1503 and
1720 to your computer.

How are you determining the IP? I presume you look in the router for the
wan IP and that it is not still a private IP (192.168.x.x., 10.x.x.x, or
172.16-32.x.x.).

No.

get the right IP to use Netmeeting?
Whether or not you can use NetMeeting depends on router and ISP
configuration. There is no universal "right" IP determination strategy.

All routers would have similar problems.

Assuming you are using XP, have you considered trying Messenger for video
calling (from the specs for the router it seems it has built in UPnP
support required by Messenger).

Is it possible that you are using the router in bridging mode so
effectively are already using a dmz type feature?
